A Kiss

The day dawned with a sensation neither cold nor warm
But rather with that expectation
Felt of days which long to be loosed of winter’s hold
For the fair embrace of spring.

Spring,
So like a woman’s charms
To which a man longs to turn his gaze
Though in truth
Its you I’m remembering
With the stirring in the air.

But what is this but passing time,
And time,
Time is not the prison –
The prison is the passing of time without you.
Alone
It is the winter of the soul
And I yearn for spring.
And I ask myself,
What it is that I truly desire?
And thinking of you,
What is truth?
For words are just playthings for the ears.
Speak to me with your eyes,
Those windows of your soul,
And let the truth be told on my lips with your kiss.

A moment,
Just a moment
But in that moment comes to pass things the heart cannot forget,
For such truth as this
Is bound in the wellsprings of the soul
And becomes a touchstone of our being
And as all else around us stands still
And is forgot in that moment –
That kiss –
We will know truth.

Have you longed to be kissed as I’ve desired for so long to kiss you?
Long and deep
With your body pressed to mine ever as tightly as my arms would seek to hold you?
To kiss fiercely,
Urgently,
The gasps for breath mingled with the little sounds which need no words to tell.
Let them tell me of your love.

To taste the sweet,
Moist press of your lips –
If I could kiss you a thousand times
Still
It wouldn’t be enough –
But if only once,
Let me kiss you as if heart and soul were bound together forever.
And I would be a fool to think that I alone desire to know that moment with you.
But I believe in dreams
And my dreams
Which conjure you in the night
I feel your presence
And dreams are a sweeter place
And the days very air seems alive with your name
As if whispered on the breeze.
Let me look into your eyes.
Is there not a light within that shines for me
Though it is faint as the last light of the setting sun?
If only that
Then let me see the sunset in your eyes,
For what sunset could be as beautiful as you?

Author's Note
And what is a kiss, specifically? A pledge properly sealed, a promise seasoned to taste, a vow stamped with the immediacy of a lip, a rosy circle drawn around the verb “to love.” A kiss is a message too intimate for the ear, infinity captured in the bee’s brief visit to a flower, secular communication with an aftertaste of heaven, the pulse rising from the heart to utter its name on a lover’s lip: ‘Forever’.”
Edmond Rostand
