Romani American

Wake up, wake up
The sun is up and glaring
The world doesn't care about anything
The Roma are screaming "what about us"
My work grows harder everyday
Judged by the mainstream idea
That the color of my skin gives me a leg up
No one wants to talk about nuances
That as white as I can look and present as
There will always be those people in the crowd
Who can pick up on the clues and the facts
There's something not white about me
My language, my style, the shape of my face
Look it up, look it up, I look entirely too much... like them
My skin holds the sun in it's cells
When I let the rays linger on my skin
I'm confused and I am lost these days
On where mixed people are allowed to stand
To deny the white in me makes no sense
But to deny the rest of me doesn't make sense either
Where do I get to talk about the cultural appropriation of Roma?
That white witches have stolen so much from us
That Hollywood has turned us into sexy conartist thieves
Where do I go to talk about the stores and
shops with the slur "gypsy" in their names?
Where do I talk about the colorism in my community?
Where my Grandma threw Romani slurs in my face
For being born a few shades too light?
My hair just happens to be a little too brown...
The lasting emotions over the fact I don't look
Like the Roma Disney and Hollywood have created
Where do I go to reconnect to my people?
Where? Where??... Where... Do I belong
I'm nothing to people who can't see
My whole I have been bullied by those who knew my "secret"
Where do I talk about the men who love the idea of fucking "A gypsy girl"
Where do I talk about the guilt over my skin not being dark enough?
Of having been influenced by my mother's dna?
I don't know... I just... Don't know anymore
And when I bring it up I get stomped down
Because if I can only learn to shut my mouth
Maybe the privilege of my skin tone would finally win out
