Dreams That Matter
'Love costs all we are and will ever be,,
yet it is only love which sets us free'
-Maya Angelou
I still got faith in some new day,
Lawd, don't take my hopes away.
If rings and curls and pink on little girls
make fierce boys scare them into whirls,
let us stay all laughing, all the same,
we and they are all the same.
Us, we're no better than the next big thing;
a song that's all the same, we sing.
Unsilenced, our exuberant song
of hope that tomorrow will be as bright
as today, or brighter.
Lawd, don't take that hope away.
Don't mask their pretty faces
into some unneeded shame,
that only time can teach them
they got ample time to dream.
Help them see that dreams matter, they do,
so let them sleep deeply to wake anew.
Lawd, don't take our dreams away.

This was definitely inspired by Angelou; you did an amazing job emulating her, PR, particularly that final line. . .

There's such a bright hopefulness to Maya Angelou, I wanted to bring that forth, I think hope was perhaps her medicine for all she endured and witnessed, especially living through the 60's. I think if she were alive today she would be concerned about what all the current events are doing to children and reminding us to preserve their hopes which matter, that's kind of what I thought of when I wrote this. But, of course she had many wisdoms, so I'm still learning. Thanks so much for the encouragement and RL add :)

Yes, very impressionistic, not a lot of depth as yet, mainly take into heart what is seen as real at face value. Words do not yet have meaning they are confusing and can only be imagined the true meaning especially in the construct of a sentence. Nonetheless seeds are planted and how they grow are up for grabs, decisions to make and paths to plow, even when words have not much depth of a young impressionistic child.
I'm not one to talk in looking back, I was a terrible mother. Never should have been. My cultivation skills were not yet honed, my insight not even a bud. Glad you wrote this comment gave me a chance to validate.

I adore the rhyme and flow of Stanza 1. And you made excellent use of repetion. Glad to see you challenging yourself while we're taking a bit of a break away from the classics.

Maya Angelou is definitely a challenge, there's really such depth to her wisdom, reading her poems is kind of like looking at one of those ancient soil samples with all the layers. I'm so glad you liked this, thanks so much for the comment and RL add :)

God that was a wonderful write, very reminiscent of Maya and so perfectly woven to fill those two comps. Right off from the beginning "I still got faith in some new day," it just lays down the sincerity.
Good luck in the comps.
Good luck in the comps.

You know, as I was reading Maya Angelou, I was really struck by her honesty, and I wondered what she would say today, and that first line just came to me, and I just kept writing from there. It seemed like her hopes and dreams were like a cleanly burning fuel for her, and she was an engine of sincere expression. Thanks so much for the great comment :)
