Avoidance

the fear kept me at bay
from others
I never questioned it
it was welcomed
I saw it as a loyal dog
protecting me from enemies
I never looked
into its eyes
that made me fearful
I wondered what if...
it doesn't have eyes?
and I end up
staring
at burning darkness
at the back of my neck
down my spine
unable to scream or run
unable to hide
from the gaze
of the void
within
