COOKIN'

this music
born of
roots
damp and dark as
dirt
but bright
as a full on moon,
cutting
through
to stone white bone
like some jagged
knife
but holy,
nourishing,
this concoction
of heart and soul
spiced hot,
simmered long
and bubbling
up
and out
and into
sacred twang
and righteous riff
and rip
and howl
and
goddamn
it was
you
who set
us free
and gave us
almost all what
soothes
our weary
souls
even now

I think Little Richard might have been the true King of Rock 'n' Roll, though he liked to call himself its "architect." Bob Dylan called him "the original spirit that moved me to do everything I would do." Like all of us, LR was a complicated soul, and beautiful in his bright, unusual way.
