From Where Did They Fall?

From whence were they struck, and from where did they fall?
Were they victims of of life or the evils of sin?
Each filled with desire, some corrupt and some pure
What of eternity were they hoping to win?

Some there I knew once, and I now must confess
So loving and kind with each living breath
I’d mourn them with tears, but they’d ask me for silence
All that’s beautiful in life comes back to sweet death

I pray that their joy may somewhere be stored
Reminders of how they once were adored
Pressed down now into this eternal pile
Was each act of love somehow worthwhile?

Some writhed in pain as their ending came near
Some tugged with life in weakness and fear
Some gave themselves wholly to lusts
Knowing their beauty would all come to dust
