Ethics Involved with Independence

Consider the order of operations
In a math nobody understands
In 1985 Daniel Johnston
Said Hi, how are you?
He was crazy enough
To be on MTV
An outsider in lo-fi alternative
In 1990 Daniel Johnston
Was schizophrenic
He threw the keys out
Of his father’s plane
And they crashed
He was involuntarily committed
To a mental hospital
In 1993 Kurt Cobain
Was crazy enough
To often wear Johnston’s
Alien frog shirt
He struggled with addiction,
Depression and fame
In 1994 Cobain was found dead
A single gunshot wound
To the head self-inflicted
My creativity was always in bloom
In 2016 Sturgill Simpson
Covers Nirvana’s In Bloom
So look into my eyes
And tell me who I am
Read my mind
And be afraid
Am I just as crazy
As everybody else?
Look into my heart
See the reflection
Of my soul
Genius or insane,
Halo or horns?
"I can’t fake it anymore.
Peace, love, empathy"

Author's Note
This is an older poem, kind of a "Six degrees from Kevin Bacon" type poem connecting Daniel Johnston to Kurt Cobain to Sturgill Simpson. The poem ends with the words of Kurt Cobain's suicide note. "I can’t fake it anymore. Peace, love, empathy."
