Red sky at night

Farmers and fishers with saltwater veins  
tough as old boots and twice as loyal  
gathered, apart but so close together  
a screen as the kitchen-party table  

listened and wept  
as bards applied melodies like a salve  
balladeers promised better days to come  
the drone sounded its heavy lament  
beneath the chant of amazing grace  
 
above it all, radiant firmament of sailor’s delight  
sang along in the full range of suitable hues:  
shades of  
salmon, thistle, mayflower, raspberry,  
lobster, dory, apple and fox,  
lighthouse, lupin, tractor, buoy,  
and blood…  
 
if colours could make sounds  
there is no doubt  
that the sky was keening  
for this land of buoyant souls
