Came in an Orange and Clear Bag

The most
embarrassing sandwich
made with love
comes on wheat bread.

9 years old
opening the brown bag
of terror at a lunch table
filled with kids.

Brown bread
peanut butter an jelly
and an apple.
Punishment fruit.
Punishment food.

Others with their dazzling
white bread and Twinkies
made me hate healthy choices.
I dreamed of Ho-Ho's and Suzy-Q's
something my mom would never buy.

No junk food. Oh the sadness.

It wasn't until I was at a friends house
and had a sandwhich on white bread
and struggled to get it off the roof
of my mouth, that I appreciated
the dirt loaf my mom bought.

I still hate apples.

It was love that made those lunches
that I despised. Bread on the roof
of my mouth opened my eyes
and my heart.

Author's Note
My photo.

My mom would save the bread bags, and in the winter we put our feet in the bags before our boots to protect our socks and feet if our boots leaked. Fucking wheat bread. ❤❤
