Teenage Rampage          (Part 2)

I was never sweet sixteen
Lost my innocence well before
I was on my way to alcoholism
a path set when I was fifteen
Following in a Glasgow tradition
an almost compulsory journey
if you didn't drink and smoke
and do drugs you weren't a Man
Ruling by fear of knife and razor
Now and then a claw hammer
Circumstance dictated the choice
Loved the nickname, said so much
"Ho! How's it gowin Big Man."
Or alternatively "Big Dougie's Boy."
One of the most feared men
In the neighbourhood; a psychopath

Drinking every night, falling down
Always fighting at the weekends
'Well, you had to protect your turf.'
Occasionally gangs would infiltrate
They needed open razor-sharp reprisals
None of us ever walked the streets alone
Too risky unless you were a good runner
Never learned the knack of running
Learned the knack of fucking people up
I was once caught outside alone
Worst thing stupidly I was chasing skirt
Lifted the first one above my head
Slammed his back down on wrought iron
He screamed like a 'little fuckin girl!'
Sucker punched from behind: Wobbled
Turned around, there was another five
Although I damaged most of them
Eventually, I was overpowered
And succumbed to a severe beating
Broken ribs, badly burst knuckles
Teeth kicked out, black and blue
Bloodied and sore left for dead

The police eventually turned up
The van screeched to a halt
Lying half on the pavement half on the road
Sargent’s voice came booming
"Ho! Are you Big Dougie's Boy?"
"Get the fuck aff the road or we’ll lift ye!"
"Constable MacKinnon, his family are all scum!"
To avoid arrest I dragged myself to my feet
And staggered to the bus stop
Four of my attackers needed hospital treatment
This is the only time my father was proud
Proud of me and what I had done
Proud of me that I fought and never ran
Proud of me that I didn’t go to the hospital
Like a fucking pansy would have to
After that, I had a reputation to protect
Violence, extreme violence was the answer
No Surrender - No Retreat - No White Flag
The path was now, set
