Social Distancing

Phil sang
“*All I need is a TV show,
that and a radio”
An obsession with media described
living vicariously
assuming the character of characters
people, places, relationships, scenarios
milieus conjured for entertainment
become real life to the desperately lonely

Sitting on an ordained space
on the big brown couch
singing **“…you wanna go where
everybody knows your name”
yelling Norm!!
when your good buddy comes in
transported from a mundane life
in nowheresville suburbia
to sitting on a barstool
with an abundance of friends
in a popular Boston watering hole

Smartphones, tablets, laptops
cable TV, online TV shows old and new
sleep sacrificed on the binge-watch altar
movies at your fingertips, computer games
bombarded, inundated with media stimuli
living in isolation yet ostensibly connected
to millions via social media
lives validated by thumbs-up emoji’s

We’ve been sheltering place for years

*“Turn It On Again” by Genesis
**“Theme to Cheers”

Author's Note
How often do you hear said, by people older than say 40, "when I was a kid we used to play outside till the sun went down?" We are now obsessed with the plethora of media resources available to keep us constantly transfixed by one screen or another. NaPo/GloMo/WriMo 2020 #10
