Among the Willows
I been on the run most of my life
Started with petty crimes
Now I run armed with a knife
Been on the run from the drunk
Who raised me with a belt
Running from Johnny Law
Been on the run from myself
I hide away during the day
I steal during the night
My one and only friend
Has been the half moonlight
Well, there was this one night
Things were going as planned
I broke into the house
Of the county's richest man
Spending all his ill-earned money
On women, cards and booze
I told myself as I broke the window
This ace-high man has nothing to lose
I scoured through his drawers
Ready to leave
When something fragile hit the floor
In came one of his women
And how loudly she did scream
In walked the west's richest gambling man
I was caught red-handed it seemed
Unless I could silence them
It was what I'd had to do
Then I ran forever
I ran three nights through
I ran until I could see
My wanted poster in the sky
I dropped to my knees
And for anyone who could hear, I cried
To God or to the devil
Whoever heard me first
I fell to the desert floor
And waited for the worst
When the stars faded away
And the sun began to rise
I continued life on the run
Being forever followed by God's eyes
Started with petty crimes
Now I run armed with a knife
Been on the run from the drunk
Who raised me with a belt
Running from Johnny Law
Been on the run from myself
I hide away during the day
I steal during the night
My one and only friend
Has been the half moonlight
