The Great Poets of History

Shakespeare

Shakespeare was a writer
From back in the Tudor days
He wasn't much of a street fighter
But he could sure write a hell of a play

Hamlet, King Lear and MacBeth
Just to name a few
No one knows much about his death
Or if he wrote all that stuff too.

Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe
Wrote many-a poem and story
They were pretty dark though
And often rather gory

His twisted tales and rhyme
Have a horror and gothic theme-o
He’ll be remembered for all time
As the Godfather of Emo.

William Wordsworth

William Wordsworth was indeed
A very romantic dude
If you want to give his work a read
I recommend ‘The Prelude’

It's a really, really, really long
Epic ‘bout the things he did and thought
But he left out how he liked ping-pong
And his S.P bookie rort.

T.S Eliot

T.S Eliot was a guy
Who like to write about cats
He never wore a necktie
To stick it to the bureaucrats

Viv was the name of his chick
While he ran his lecture hall hustle
And she would often get a bit of side-dick
From a bloke named Bertrand Russell

Dylan Thomas

Dylan Thomas was a Welshman
Who is hard to judge or label
He had a true gift with the pen
And could drink you under the table

When he was in America
Back in nineteen fifty-three
He dropped dead at a bar
After eighteen shots of whiskey

Rex Durkin

Rex Durkin is a wordsmith
Of the highest degree
His life is that of myth
The Rhodes scholars all agree

His beautiful work is abundant
With humility and insights
Without not one word redundant
Is forever always how he writes

This list is by no means extensive. I could have added so many more. These were just the undeniable greats. An honorable mention to Robert Frost, Oscar Wilde, Emily Dickinson and E.E. Cummings. Sorry...
