Unfeathered Wings
An angel has fallen
Her wings tarred and unfeathered
A weight unbearable on her haunted mind
Was one I would gladly have lifted from her limbs
If only I had known, if only she had told
But I should have seen
The sadness in her eyes, always there
But her smile fooled me, blinded me to her pain
How lovely she was and her voice just as sweet
So caught up in my own sorrow
So absorbed in my living pain I missed the clues
The stories dripping from her eyes
Her song echoing in my head, a choir of angels
Falling like the sky that could not hold her up
Lifting the veil of nightfall as black as boiling tar
Thicker than blood no water could wash away
The darkness in her thoughts
Consumed her light within
And so like a phoenix she crashed to the earth
Without a soul to rise again into heaven
If only I had been there, if only I could have broken her fall
This sadness savages my heart

I just went to Google to look up Carrying Cathy and found the video on YouTube. Never heard the song before but the parallelparallels were Erie. I have had a few friends comit suicide and it always feels the same. Wondering if I could have done anything, if I had known. But the signs were there and I saw them without understanding.
I think this must be a verry common experience. This poem is about a very talented artist who suffered from bi-polar manic depression. To say she was on a roller coaster would be putting it mildly.
My best friend also took his life 20 years ago. He was an artist as well. A painter and sketch artist. SThe woman I wrote this about was a song writer, poet and singer. Artists seem to suffer depression. I've been battling depression for 37 years. Nearly killed myself a few times. I have poems about it here. Writing about it helps but the lines seem undefined at times.
I've heard of Ben Folds Five and I'm sure I have heard songs of there's many times but for whatever reason never did so deliberately. I am going to listen to more of their music. Thanks for commenting Ben!

Poetryman, this was filled with emotion and heartbreak. I saw a post once where it shows everyone who suffers from depression as smiling, happy. It is one of the most difficult things to deal with. Hope you're doing well. I always look forward to reading your pieces.

Thanks for commenting Sky! It seems like everyone knows someone who took their life. Suicide is called a mental illness but I don't think all suicides are from being mentally ill. Some are the result of the insanity around us and the abuse others put on someone. If it is an illness it is because they caught the disease from the abusive people in society.
