This may be an ignorant question, but was that a British thing too? I always thought it was just American ( wilderness and all ). While British children were more into knights and monarchy. I certainly was when there, but then again, I have always loved history.
I guess books are cross-cultural regardless of continent. My father had so many westerns I could've started a library.

I loved, and still do, reading novels of medieval history,
rosemary sutcliffe, henry treece, etc, but my gran and I
also loved the 'sudden' westerns by oliver strange, who was
funnily enough, a british author :)

I remember those days. The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers and his horse, Trigger. Thanks the trip down memory lane.
