An Unfortunate Affair

According to the FBI, a sex-trafficking law enforcement operation in the region brought in 180 arrests during the 11 days leading up to the Super Bowl game. That puts Atlanta on the high end of the scale compared to arrests in other Super Bowl Cities. This is Carmen Turner with Channel 2 Action News more updates on this story at 11p.m.

Emerson turned off the television in her room and prepared herself for the dinner party she was hosting in her four bedroom home tonight. She had been watching updates on the sex trafficking epidemic being that she worked in a shelter for women whom had escaped the lifestyle of being owned and sold for money gains. It was hard for her at times to work some cases as she had been a victim of sexual abuse as a child. From seven years old until she turned fifteen and entered as a freshmen in high school, Emerson’s cousin Paige who was much older than her touched her without permission, violating her body and causing trauma that had yet to leave her mind even at the age of 28 years old. Despite her beating the odds, she managed to graduate and left town for five years only to return to the bedside of her dying mother who had lost her constant battle with AIDS.
Now Emerson, made her home in Riverdale, Georgia with her husband Owen who was an assistant coach for the Atlanta Falcons. They had been married for two years and were now trying to have a baby but hadn’t had any luck in that area as Emerson suffered terribly from Endometriosis- a condition that gave her much pain in her abdominal area. Emerson put her gold hoop earrings in her ear, brushed her blonde hair out, and colored her lips a smoked purple matte. She lined up her brown colored eyes and rubbed cocoa butter on her smooth brown toned skin. The dinner party was to celebrate that they had won in catching many men and women in the sex sting operation thanks to her loving husband who also helped out. Emerson slipped on her one sleeve red Tom Ford dress and headed to the kitchen as the chefs prepared the meals. She checked her watched and realized that guest would be arriving in less than 30 minutes. She begin to fix up her spacious living room area to try and kill time when the ringing of the doorbell startled her. Emerson walked up and glanced out the peep hole and saw the police standing with her husband in handcuffs.
Emerson immediately opened the door. The blue lights coming from the police vehicle and the lights from her porch showed a girl in the backseat of the car dishevel with mascara running down her face and stains of blood as if she had put up a fight.
“Mrs. Rivers? We’re arresting your husband on counts of being involved in the sex trafficking sting that took place down here during the Super Bowl. He was holding this young lady hostage at a condo he owns in Decatur and she managed to get away after putting a heroin filled needle in his vein.”
“I- I don’t understand my husband would never do such a thing.” Emerson said looking at the man who claimed to have loved her and understood her. He had promised to cherish every fragile piece of her. She knew he could be capable of many things but this type of pain would last a lifetime.
Owen wouldn’t even respond or look into her eyes. Her heart was supposed to be wiser and she should’ve saw it but he kept it hidden until now.
“Baby, I’m so sorry please forgive me.” He said confessing to her that he was in fact involved in sex-trafficking. He let her know that betraying her wasn’t in the plans.
“Mam if there is any information you can give us to put towards this case please let us know. We are taking him down to booking. He’s going to be in there for a very long time. I’m sorry you have to deal with this.” The officer told her offering his condolences.
He called in on his walkie talkie that he was bringing Owen in and just like that, they exited the house and Emerson was left standing by herself of whether to give up all the information she knew on her husband or forgive him and move on. That was the thing about love and marriage, it was a sad reality to know in the beginning that love does not last forever. She had worked so hard on this case and now, she would be on the stand, testifying against someone she trusted. Trying to survive a dilemma that felt like it would amputate every limb of her body giving her less of herself. This was the end of her happiness and the beginning of her peace.
