Lost Love
We had it all, my sweet
The world in our hands and the ground beneath our feet
We could be free birds soaring above our lonely little town
and nothing and no one could bring us down
You had a fiery crimson temper that not even my cobalt personality could put out
We’d often race to the hilltops and yell out to the skies
We climbed mountains and had the time of our lives
One day, awakened by the cold, I discovered you were gone
gone like the flowers to the winter storm
my heart cried out for you, my love
I had waterfalls of tears on my powder cheeks
but no adoring shout answered my choked plead
I knew then I wasn’t getting you back
a bullet hit my soul and turned it cherry
I knew then what the old stories had told
about lost love and your youth disappearing in the blink of an eye
