from the ledge—the wising-up of innocence

I think I am smart unless I am really, really in love,
and then I am ridiculously stupid.
—Taylor Swift

got my face turned to the wall
cause my eyes can't see much further anymore
as my dreams lie limp before me on the floor
should i melt, a waxen ball
will you hear me if i call
tho my heart hurts to its bitter, dying core

got my fingers in my ears
cause i cannot bear to hear you anymore
when your vacant promises i so abhor
are you caught up in my tears
tho your love lags in arrears
is your desperate cry trust's only guarantor

got my tumi alpha™ packed
cause i will not be your ember anymore
till some day you spit my ashes out the door
nor am i some artefact
whose esteem you can extract
till some day you let my flotsam float offshore

got my finger on your pulse
cause i sense you're swiftly falling off my edge
nor am i enchanted by your empty pledge
tho you tremble and convulse
i am swayed not by impulse
yet have i half mind to pull you from the ledge…
