he is not screaming
because he’s hungry
he is not crying
because his diaper is soiled

he is screaming because
he is in excruciating pain

he is crying because they
used a sharp implement
to cut off part of his penis

he will settle down
his wound will heal
probably without complication

but does the emotional wound heal

or does it fester

in the depths of his unconscious

to emerge
later as some form of
aggression
anger
fear
mistrust

will he feel inadequate
when he sees other boys
whose genitalia look different

will he feel angry
that this was done to him
against his will
and without his consent
