Light thoughts
A single photon speeding
From a distant dying star
Is captured by the mirror
Of mighty Palomar.
Alone it tells us little
But with trillions more combined
It helps us see our heavens
In mankind's kind of mind.
In the spectrum of my life
Through grey prisms of the night
Dark hues of guilt and grief
And bright colours of delight.
Each a spectrum of our own.
Which Fraunhofer line of fate
Condemns someone to foolishness
While another 's hailed as Great?

A very cute play on the title, Ammonite. The final stanza reminds me of an old saying, Kill a man you're called a murderer; kill a thousand and you're called a conqueror. Just as we are multidimensional beings, we see in spectrums of colored light, and that's what makes this poem so special.

Thanks Ahavati for your thoughtful comment. Only too true! As a retired biologist I am well aware of the spread of talent, luck and determination between different folk. I have had much luck in my life.

Thanks, S.O. - a few lines have been rattling about in my head for many months. They seemed to come together a day or two ago, though I am not particularly pleased with the poem. The important point is to realise that we are all points on a widely spread spectrum of talent, intelligence, scholarship and a thousand other abilities. Our stupid politicians and bureaucrats seem unable to comprehend this and think they can put us all into two or three convenient boxes. Goodnight, dear friend.
