The Things That Trees do Hear

Oh, if the trees could talk!
The stories they would tell!
Of lovers, or family members, out for a spring walk,
Of the beautifully overcast afternoon wishes, made at the "Ol' Wishing Well",
Of lumberjacks at work, and of gardeners planting trees.
Of the lovesick, picking flowers for their betrothed or longingly searching for answers as they pick the petals off a daisy,
Of twittering birds, fluttering butterflies, and buzzing honeybees,
Of morning strolls with a hot coffee.
Of dappled sunlight, spring showers, and the ocassional mushroom growth,
Of Pagan prayers, drum circles, centaurs, faeries, and dryads,
Of the baker who, on the way to work, dropped a loaf,
Or the many newspapers, floating on the wind, getting stuck on a branch, and flapping their ads.
Of joggers, dog walkers, deer and wild horses,
Clandestine lovers of disapproving families,
Stolen kisses between the sunlight of May and the moonlight of December, with trees as their only witnesses,
Or Guardian angels at work, songs of nearby sirens, and brambles and wildflowers of all varieties.
...Or the lost little children, accidental or...otherwise,
The theft and the murder plots,
Car crashes, practical jokes, violent fights, arguments, and lineage demise.
Of riots, demonstrations, and boycotts,
Of assults, murders, and the callous dumping of bodies like trash,
Of littering, poaching, and torture,
Of the homeless, the hypothermia of winter, and the unstable, speaking balderdash,
Of the unearthly creatures, massacres, and seizures.
Of wildfires, abandoned or lost pets and items,
Of broken dreams, hanging from the branches of the strongest of trees,
The gruesome origins of fairytales, the fall of many kingdoms,
Of arson, and bad weather, the highest and lowest of degrees....
Oh woe! If the trees could talk!
The warnings they would give!
As the world runs amok,
Maybe, at least a small haven, they could give....
