There Will Always Be Trains

Ever since I fled out to the country
To fall asleep in nature's softer bed
I no longer hear the low rumble sounds
From the humming hive of the city
accelerating, speeding, frantically
away into some unknown distance
toward some unknown emergency

Instead, I hear the melodies of rain
Orchestrating puddles under rooftops,
Bouncing off the branches of willow trees
And a distant train at random hours; sings
A train that for my benefit doesn't know
It should be a low rumbling sports car, hello?
In the twenty first century

And those poor sports car enthusiasts-
Always moving about like snakes; since
Their precious noise will soon be outdone
By a howling drone...
Pouncing on our gps locations,
Grabbing unlucky shirts by the collar,
Declaring a curfew violation,
Dangling sleepy feet about as it whisks away
and plopping us down, straight into bed-
on the roof of a moving train.
But the cool air and calm whistle
blows and-
drowns out the noise of the drones
And so, again, here lies another fortunate generation
falling asleep to the tune of
the wrong century
