His Life Today

Today he decided to break his routine
Instead of working he decided to be social
For as long as he had lived in this area
He had never really gone out
He didn't know anyone
It was a necessary evil
For now he was that much closer to his goal

But the more achieved was the more he realized he missed something:
He missed having people to share
Those achievements with
He missed being able to talk to people
Which is why he decided to go out

Maybe he could make a friend
If not he could at least have fun
He had no game plan
But he always saw this one bar
On his way to work
It looked interesting he thought
So maybe that is where he'd start
And see where the night takes him

All went as planned

He walked in and got himself
A table not too far back
And not too close to the door
He was at the right spot to see
How people behaved in this bar
Hence absorbing the culture

He soon noticed that he was
The only one sitting alone
So he just observed some more

He saw some kid try to ask out
A woman and getting turned down
She seemed to be there alone
But she was comfortable
She had a way of filling the room
Without moving around

He watched as more people tried hitting on her and each of them failing
She was there for a purpose none of them could fulfill

He then noticed a group of people
Sharing a laugh
They clearly only met that night
But the process of getting to know
Each other excited them
They all knew they'd never meet again
But were pouring each other life stories

He couldn't help but laugh a little
Because a few years ago
He would be at the centre of that circle

By just observing he could see
Who each person was
The one drowning their sorrow
The extrovert who needs attention
The cocky kid who needed a wake up call

And then he thought about himself

He was the guy who didn't fill the room with warmth
But a type of coldness only a few can recognize
He was the guy who devoted himself to work
The guy who started filling the empty apartment
But couldn't fill his life with people

Tonight was refreshing but his time
Bar hopping was over
He had already collected
The life stories of many people
And maybe tonight is the epilogue

Just as he was leaving
He couldn't believe who he run into
It was an old classmate
He hadn't seen him since graduating

His 'friend' just stood there
Also shocked to see him
gorgeous woman in hand
Exuding Bravado
 
As if by divine intervention
They ran into each other

'come on join us for a drink'

'I was just on my way out
But one drink won't hurt'

Going back to the same table
He finally had company

'Is this the Mrs?'

Paying a subtle compliment

'No she's at home
I just met this one'

As she grinned
Not bothered by the direction
Of the the conversation

Trying not to be awkward

He changed the topic
And they all engaged
In a typical reunion conversation

What are you up to these days?
Are you still in contact with them?
When last did you go there?

But by the end of the night
He realized how much
He had changed
He realized how life can
Pan out differently
For each person

As he walked back into
His apartment
He couldn't help but
Laugh again

Because he realized
His life had become boring
At some point in time
He too would've tried his luck
With the lady at the bar
He would have been
Striking conversations
With strangers

But all he could account
For his life now
Is that he has a job
Which he hates
That keeps him in a cycle
Of working then going home
To repeat the cycle again
He hated his job
But it kept a roof on his head
He hated his job
But be loved the
process of his becoming

Here he was buying his time
Here he was rebuilding his life
Here he was just a man
Who went to a bar
And got Sobered up
but his own life
