christmastime

Christmas isn't just a day, it's a frame of mind. —Valentine Davies

'tis christmastime, the people say—
reindeer and snow and sleigh
druid mistletoe with tinsel foil—
as jovial spirits boil
buried beneath the gaiety
of savant piety
the reason for the season lost
and o the awful cost!
 
a baby and a cruel cross
united in the loss
of human dignity and worth
commingling in the earth
sweet bethlehem, dark calvary
the shackled and the free
mortal and immortality
death and eternity

the giving of forgiving hearts
more permanence imparts
when souls slain by incontinence
find true benevolence
'tis christmastime, the people shout
oblivious about
the infant gift of bethlehem
who for our ransom came
