i'd rather be

Choices are the hinges of destiny.—Edwin Markham

i’d rather be the raindrops than the rain
the lightning than the tree it crucifies
the hopeful river dancing in its lane
than tenemented where the seabed lies

i’d rather be the hammer than the nail
striking the iron while its tempers rage
to dare to try than fret that i might fail
to be the audience upon the stage

i’d rather be alive in troubled times
than stiff stone dead on luxury’s cold breast
moreso the lofty mountain than the climb
more than the incline, let me be the crest

i’d rather be a first-class citizen
curbed by the simple liberties of home
than be the victim of a first-world prison
if, caught by flirting penchants, i should roam

i’d rather live to give than take away
the poor man’s morsel or the rich man’s glob
these simple choices measure night from day
for those who would not earth of conscience rob
