Sultanic Nights

Kohl rimmed eyes
that rival  al-Maha’s
peek shyly, cautiously
from underneath her veil.

a hint of Musk floats
in the path behind her
for eager nostrils
to pick up the trail.

the dance of her waist
sings lazy waves
of a subtle rhythm
in tune to her pace.

no encrusted jewels or
oil dipped gifts
could distract her will
or appeal to her gaze.

her heart long lost
in an elfin gamble
to a salacious stallion
an Arabian prince.

sand dunes of the desert
lay warm and waiting
to engulf hearts craving
under the palm trees’ shade .

they taste sweet dates
betwixt recitals
no, amidst revivals
of forgotten verses in
One Thousand and One tales.
