YOPJ - What is Not Garbage

"I'm gonna wear my shoe and my brother's shoe. That will be funny!" She giggled as she slid her other foot into his rain boot. She was standing next to our frequently filling kitchen garbage can, which, although it is a standard size kitchen can, it is about shoulder height for her. It has no lid. When we got it there was one. Kids!

As I'm looking down at her, I'm proud of how she turned her garbage situation into something downright golden. But why must they throw their shoes in the kitchen by the can? Three kids did that. And by the way... why aren't they wearing those when two of their voices are outside?? My life is full of little mysteries.

Every single day, plastic, disposable diapers and papers fill it at least once. We end up composting what we can but still filling two roadside cans a week, give or take. I don't mind. It fits my garbage philosophy. The garbage economy can be a thing of beauty and support many of our needs for raw materials and energy. It also represents other aspects of of our economy, like reclamation and restoration opportunities.

At some point in my adulthood I realized that with the economic solutions for our earth, none of those really involve guilting wives in kitchens about household wastebaskets.

Shoes almost matching, she, delighted at her wit, her old tearful complaint about not being ready to play with her outdoor siblings almost forgotten, she practically dances over to the laundry job I gave her. She cheerfully manages to put ALL the big clothes from one front loader into the other!

She's not dressed for the weather but now she's ready to be observed by the other kids who disappointingly left her inside, crying and hollering their names. She finishes her job by the door, satisfied.

We can throw the whole waste problem into reverse. For now, however, garbage can guilt is part of the narrative. I will breed a solution to existence, if I must.
