Suspicion kindled...

Poetry made me suspicious.
Or maybe it’s just the poets.
Nothing in humans is as it appears.

First, I became aware of the movement of my soul,
seething magma under the surface,
ready to move mountains and build new worlds –
sometimes by force of explosion and flow,
sometimes by slow-creeping flickers –
but always liquid and always hot.

Carrying that weight of emotion as a secret
was like boiling from the inside out;
but to fully unleash it would be destructive
as fire and flood…
And I’ve never wished to cause pain.

Then, to the rescue, came an underground world of poetry.
A protective wall, within which to explode.
Safe release of my darkness and blinding light.
A shield between the tangible world and the cauldron within.
And souls… so many souls… unencumbered in their obscurity.

That’s when I became suspicious….
When I realized that poetry is everywhere,
a second skin carefully hidden beneath our clothes
to keep some semblance of decency.

I started to wonder –
Is the stoic man across from me composing desperate love sonnets as we discuss business strategy?
Is the bored checkout clerk dreaming of being ravaged by a sadistic lover?
Does the accountant's heart ache with spills of regretful free-verse?

We are all just simmering souls,
propelled by energy no one else can predict,
driven by the pain of being half-known and misunderstood.
And the reactions we witness are only ever the outer shell.

Sometimes I’ve tried to live as a whole, naked soul in this world,
but someone always ends up with blisters and welts.
This realm can’t contain the force of raw spirits.

What if we set them free?
