once upon a tail...

a sand cat—
whose presence was silence
marked solely by
a press of damp pawprints

how granular sadness
—its hollowing attrition—
made each print lighter
till a day came

where she lacked
                                         enough
                                                                                          hereness

to impress her being in soft sand
—how july's heat
sucked her atoms from the air
not a molecule left

how even old prints
gave up their shape
gravity
pushing back
butters
