Image for the poem my Father

my Father's world

This is my Father’s world:
Oh, let me ne’er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong,
God is the ruler yet.

—Maltbie D. Babcock, 1901

my father’s father’s world
before the earth was bled
his last remains hid in the cold
where corpus dreams are splayed

dread was my father’s world
where first his father paid
the sacrifice in human blood
whose weight stood on his head

what now my fallen world
how oft my tears have prayed
that swords and bullets at me hurled
might not my faith invade

for tis my Father’s world
where justice is delayed
by Him Whose grace is manifold
Whose mercies are unswayed

yet comes another world
where earthly masquerade
stripped of its guise when truth unfolds
its just reward is weighed
