Image for the poem red fingernail polish

red fingernail polish

you painted my soul with red fingernail polish
you got from a gumball machine for five cents
a cheap garish red
bright and noisy

because my quiet days spoke too loudly to you
in fact they scream

you run with a whore off I 82
scoring thrill by the minute
I wasn't like her

my reserve made your blood run cold
your betrayal made mine boil
you took our relationship off the fire

still, I simmered

big smoky plumes of denial fill the air around us
I deny my anger
you cover yours

we love each other

sometimes

I was once wild turkey
hundred proof lust with you
not anymore

I still love you

sometimes

my soul is painted
a cheap and violent red

are you thrilled?

I still love you

sometimes
