the animal grief

'twas the sight
at hundred ten k an hour
the whole moment
from approach
to passing
over
in a blink

the roadkill

its mate
lay half mashed
the pink and grey plume
quite a contrast
to the drab
dark of the asphalt

the partner
seen running
towards the body
pushing, cajoling with its beak
like a spouse in shock
no different to a human

it would trot away
at the approach of
another speeding killer
charging
at a hundred kilometers an hour

then would come back
pushing, cajoling
its dead mate

the sight
ended all music
in one car

the moment
the sight
the grief
brief
in time
yet
permanent
in its impact.

Author's Note
