whispers, smiles, lullabies, kisses, and blue skies

“….And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace”— Sir Cecil Spring-Rice, 1918
[Quoted in I Vow To Thee, My Country—Gustav Holst], based on Proverb 3:17

i have a taste
for whispers, smiles,
lullabies, kis-
ses, and blue skies,
surrendering
my rights to dis-
enchantment, hard
hits, near misses.

whispers in ears,
a gentle touch,
as on the lips
they cling so much;
and yet their mes-
sages are strong,
that heal the breach,
that right the wrong.

smiles lend a glow
to weary eyes,
like hopeful wings
on which to rise.
their quiet sun
ignites the face,
enchantment to
the human race.

the soft lilt of
a lullaby
inspires the spi-
rit to comply
with medicine
dispensed to calm
the troubled soul
that needs its balm.

the kisses of
forgiving lips,
an ocean of
refreshing sips,
revive the heart
that yearns for love,
as solemn lives
their virtues prove.

and o the bliss
of azure skies,
a canopy
to soothe the cries
of children torn
from potent dreams,
waiting one day
to be redeemed…
