Hidden Places

Hidden Places
Should I tell you I love you a thousand times?
Rather let me speak my love but once
And seal it with a thousand kisses ~

***

There once lived a man who was not so much in truth
Or in pretense
The fires of youth had become an inferno
Out of control…

He lived simply now in self-imposed stillness
In a wilderness where new growth
After years
Had begun to bloom again
Where only the blackness of scorched earth had been

Her words -
(To him)
- Seemed like a song bird’s
Which he yearned after every day
She was the breath of spring in his winter
The hope of dreams in the darkness of his night
He stirred within the chains which bound him
To daily cares and toils
And looked again to the stars

He wasn’t sure how she felt about him.
And he didn’t know if he ever would
For
For all she shared there remained a place within
For all the depths she shared,
She sometimes –
Though seldom
– acknowledged a place that she left no hint of the way to
Save a distance undefined by miles
Unshared to any
Sheltered even from herself

We all have such a place he mused,
Save hers
Whatever had hollowed out that place within her
Had pierced her soul
And lay bare what few can willingly share.

Souls are not bound by the time of men.
And a soul cry still carried on her every breath
Beneath the mask of beauty she had woven
And though he sometimes saw the shards of Venus rising in her eyes
It remained a place beyond the asking
And perhaps the telling

He didn’t know whether whatever love or friendship endured the years
Would ever allow her to open this place to him

She had a depth that most couldn’t see
Looking inward revealing that which is without
And he had held sacred the echoes of her dreams
~ Those she dared to share

For she possessed the dreams that speak
And he possessed the dreams that would
Though having no voice of their own to give
Found solace within her own

He looked again at the stars
- What a brief span was the time of man to them -
And breathed deeply
For he also believed in forever and the soul

The man sat quietly
Pensive
He was unsettled
He had an unearthing feeling
As he stared out into the deep gray-black darkness of fading night
Feelings swirled through his soul like watercolor dreams
He stared deeper
As if to touch the things he felt but couldn’t see

Hers was the gift of looking inward
To see that which lay without
Yet inwardly his feelings swirled
And outward only the great ones remained
Rearguard to the host of the night
Against the coming of the day

Perhaps in a coming day
Among distant stars
Her soul would gasp to catch its breath at last
And he would cradle her
Within his
