Dreams Come True

Gone I became, from a world who’s heart
Was as hardened as a cold stone.
Taking little with me, as I make my way
On a journey I did travel alone.
Farewell I bid, and in a secret way
To those I will see no more.
Believing better ahead, I leave for a place
I have only dreamed of before.
I am both rich and poor, talented and dumb
All borne from a strangers glance.
Against a jury of my peers, away I now go
Choosing to leave is my final stance.
Forged by desperation, and shaped by desire
I honed my souls want until…
A moment is reached, and with purity of thought
A world is created by sheer force of will.
God’s own very secret, I had stumbled across
Within me had it always been there?
Was it an escape, the maker long ago planned?
A refuge away from grief and despair.
Fears frost was next felt, but not as before
I shiver not from it’s enveloping cold.
A false friend it had been, hand in hand we once were
No longer I grip the doubt it wants me to hold.
My magical wish, has created a place
And to it stood before me a doorway.
Through the portal I passed, in a soft golden glow
Replacing the sun’s glairing rays.
Before me were fields, in patches hid flowers
Reviled by their perfumed scent.
Animals abound, through the forests and hills
In my search I found people were absent.
Wishing again I did make, a place I could live
And so a castle I made for my home.
At the same instant, a second castle was made
Though this was an inferior clone.
After a wish or two more, I realized the rules
My new powers I gave more respect.
For nature to be balanced, that which is wanted
Creates also its identical reject.
And so I conjured a realm, within my beautiful realm
It is there the bad copies are placed.
For without the existence of both, eliminating only one
Will cause the other to be also erased.
Weary I grew, and more difficult it became
To constantly entertain myself.
Companions were needed, for help and support
I chose childishly a fairy and an elf.
With small pointed ears, a face filled with freckles
And short black as night hair.
The elf was the mischievous, and playful half
Of this storybook mythical pair.
While the fairy was delicate, and timidly frail
Like winters first fallen snowflake.
Her beautiful voice, and compassionate nature
Overwhelmed all in my heart could take.
Days of tree climbing, and fishing in ponds
Evenings catching lightning bugs.
Reading stories to fill their heads, full of sweet dreams
Before a sleepy goodnight hug.
The passing of time, gradually drifted away
A power I could not wish to master.
Respectfully they slowed down, allowed me the illusion
That to them I am still much faster.
Stabbing were the pains, that would break my thoughts
A hurt I can barely hide.
Intense agony, momentarily robbing my will
Mortality’s curse no longer denied.
Life’s only guarantee, is it’s eventual end
Go back to ware it first began.
Summoning my children, choosing carefully my words
So they stay innocent of my desperate plan.
“What did one worm say to the other worm?”
Said the elf on his latest joke.
Unanswered he replied, by wiggling his closed mouth
And hummed saying, “That is how the worm spoke.”
I smiled and took, the opportunity at hand
To tell what I could not say.
Quietly I said, “There is a place you must go,
A place very far away.”
“Why must we go?” The fairy sang sadly
With tears cascading down her face.
“We do not wish, to leave you here all alone,
Please do not have us go from this wonderful place.”
Leave they would not, if they knew of my fate
Lie to them, I could not tell.
The truth was still worse, for when I expire
There existence would end as well.
Beyond this fact, would then other truths follow
Knowledge I passionately hoped to conceal
For once they were aware, they are of wish and magic
It will break the spell that keeps them for real.
A lingering pain in my throat, and my right arm so numb
Meant there could be no further delay.
“I will watch you with my crystal.” I said to them both
“I will be with you every step of the way.”
A jug of spring water, a loaf of bread each
And a satchel of fruit to share.
Hugs of long good by’s, and farewell kisses
They looked back in a tear filled stare.
With a map in hand, they kept a brisk pace
Till the familiar turned into the strange.
Gone was the green trees, in it’s place was all rot
A bleak, barren meadow was a dismal change.
The wild was savage and unnatural, and anxious to feed
Growing bold as the two traveled near.
Sacrificing both its good and bad, with the animals attack
I wished for death then the beast disappeared.
Fatigue set in, and my watchful pace it did lag
Deteriorating quickly was my ailing health.
Fending for themselves, and making their own way
Was sometimes left to the fairy and the elf.
There evil selves were out there, though not close to the pair
Instead drawing to the castle I lay.
I know all too well, you can’t hid from that which is bad
All shall come to face with some day.
With no time to spare, they found my escape way
From real into my fantasy.
Now escape to the real, it is your only hope I thought
Live for me my elf and my fairy.
The rippling light, of the barrier door
Felt cold to there trembling touch.
Entering, they held each other close
Never had they needed one another so much.
How bad the pain of separation can be
I selfishly wanted them back.
There only skill, love and great kindness
Something I know the true world truly lacks.
Just beyond my door, growing nearer to me
Roams the discarded conjured part.
With so perfect a world gone, and my best for my children
I am ready to surrender my heart.
Then one final wish, may they always know love
And protect them should evil come near.
Praying this with my last breath, to the one greater than I
The plea offered with a single begged tear.
Then across the void, of time and space
They heard a faint goodbye.
The home that was there’s, had now become
A mere twinkling in there eyes.
Children of innocence, exiled from a dream
A one of a kind is the two.
A living example, of a wish fulfilled
And that dreams really can come true.
