Work/Life Balance

The double life
held a charm
the labour of the day
and the dreams of night

It would have been ideal
to fuse the two
but he felt a strength
that some would never expect
that he had other skills,
or ambitions
beyond earning that weekly cheque

He was acutely aware
of the disparity between his wage
and those of the various companies
he had loyally served

But the balance
often became tilted
draining him of the needed energy
for those other pursuits

Perhaps, it was time management
or perhaps devoting the majority of a waking life
to be present, ready and subservient
was the true culprit

Getting that extra day,
extending the weekend into Monday
in honour of those often ridiculed unions
had some meaning and benefit

He had no union,
but without them
he knew his workplace
could be a lot worse

The indirect influence
of health and safety,
breaks
pension plans
- some basic rights

Just the luxury
of a bonus day,
and a little more steam
to engage
this double life.
