other people's windows

other people's windows glow
invading my dark with their clarity
of forms of living i'll never know or be,

the blessed and the cursed
seem equally more alive than me,

their gains, their losses, loves, and fears
seem to display more
than my small, errant footsteps
whose prints are swallowed in the shadows
of their window's discriminating light.

i move only to escape
and end only where fear plants me,
a fool's stupid revenge
against an enemy
no longer seen.

other people's windows never frame me
but still i never look away.
