Temptation (After the Set)

We started the set with Brubeck’s Take Five and Blue Rondo
A la Turk
Then couple of pieces by Corea and Camilo to whet their appetite
Then on to some original work
And though I was nervous for it being my first gig
I was doing really well

I kept good eye contact with the rest of the guys
Looking for cues and changes in case they improvised
After all being in the background no one notices the drums
Or so I thought, I was just a silhouette

Halfway through the set I noticed two cuties behind the bar
A coquettish young brunette and a smokin’ hot redhead
They were looking at me even though I had worked up a sweat
And the couple of times I looked up it was becoming more obvious

I was twenty four, ready to explore beyond my abilities
Playing music I loved with talented musicians in a quartet

At the end of the set we got a rousing round of applause
Then we made way for the next group and went backstage

We hung around for drinks and met other cats and players
We got a many a congratulations and a job well done
After the show, we each got in our cars
Some heading to an after party and I was dead set

As I came to a stop just a block away at a red light
I lit a cigarette when a corvette pulled up next to me
It was the two beauties from earlier that night
They smiled at me and the brunette on the passenger side
Lifted her eyebrows, wet her lips while licking a little lollipop
Smiled and offered it to me,
Reaching out the windows
And I took it
They giggled and the brunette uttered “after party”
The light turned green and like a jet they drove away

Yet I sat there, candy in mouth, for a couple seconds contemplating
Watching the Vette disappear, and all I could say to myself was
“Damn, the life of a musician”, but I went home to the wife.
