Get Your Wings

The other night I dreamt I held you in my hands
The idea of your angelic face made me smile,
And though for a little while it’s all I could remember
It was a comforting thought to hold you, child.
Then I got the news…
I couldn’t bear the thought, the painful fable
When the faithful are left with tears in their eyes
Without solace at the thought of an empty cradle
When graceful angels are called back to paradise
The brief eternity of you
But then I find there is some consolation, time,
That divine healing potion that mends all wounds
That which gives us signs we later understand
To a purpose we know not but become attuned
You’re watching over us
It’s these things that help us through our journey
When the memory of the beloved tightly clings
The melancholy stings for not having you here,
But knowing you’re up there where angels sing,
Sweet boy, get your wings.
