More than Myself ( after Anne Sexton )
A certain charm adorns
a gutter, you see its potential
when it becomes home;
rat breath inhaling your own—
silence louder than death
when that last dumpster slams shut.
Decay is a familiar thing
to the homeless—
larger than life curling up
inside their brick tomb at three AM.
Hopelessness seems synonymous
with vagrancy—
our eyes squint through the dark
at lumps of coal bodies, solid
in earthly presence;
yet, distant in spirit— as stars
existing somewhere above smog.
They are more than myself
these beings
in their capacity to survive.
Fallen, impoverished Gods;
angels among us unawares—
weighing the balances
to find us wanting
in our capacity to love.

Thank you, Kitty. Much appreciated.
Hopefully you will brave the challenge yourself. Let some of that love show.

What a thing it must have been to be Sexton contemplating homelessness -the sheer selfishness of entertaining Death while so many lived from day to day in the opposite way, clinging to life on whatever preserver, raft or scraps the Universe threw their way.
What a mind-fucking contrast this poem of yours uniquely presents.

Thank you. ❤📝
Sexton's explorations of pathology were feverish attempts to "gnaw at the barrier" dividing us from each other. Toward the end of her life her themes became increasingly ambitious and culturally significant.

How contemporary is this poem...here in Australia the problem of homelessness is growing each month as home prices reach ridiculous levels...women are the fastest growing group. Poignant and powerful A.

Thank you, my Friend. Not sure if you've read Sexton's 'The Awful Rowing Toward God', ( published in 1975 after her death ). It contains some of her best poetry, written in a manic state shorter than three weeks. Many of the poems ( struggling with depression ) push to find hope and meaning in the world.
This is the Sexton not many have delved into.

I honestly think you might connect somewhat with both her and Plath, Van. Being you're all rich in metaphor.
Thank you.
Thank you.

This gave me chills even though my a.c. is on, it must be the economy of words that paint a stark image, and the way it reads like a desperate persons diary written in some dark corner of existence, very much a facet of the inspiration..
I am slowly uncovering the layers of Anne Sexton, there is so much there in depth, I love how ' The Awful Rowing Toward God ' sounds, I found a first and last poem from the book, I'd like to write something about that subject, this is a great entry..

Thank you, PR. You truly caught the diary essence here. Though I am not surprised.
I cannot wait to see your entry. Rowing Toward God was a premonition to her death. Imagine what both she and Plath would've become had they not chosen an exit route.

This is a remarkable entry and in plain speak
Ya dig ?
I see homelessness constantly in my city. Some I believe and others are con artists. The problem is, even if they are con artists, it's still a crappy way to make a living ....
Eye opener and Sexton tribute
Winning words in a sea of despair

Ohhhh thank you, Poet! And for the RL honor! Yeah, some that I give to reek of alcohol - who am I to know what eases the pain of having no home? Who am I to know if the bottle wasn't' given to them? You're right: it's crappy either way.
