Role Me Over

I lied when she asked for my name
because I didn’t want to be me

allow that to sink in.
ironic in retrospect
that the only role
for which I knew the lines
was that of myself
without the hangups
she asked and I told her
everything about my love
my fantasies, my kinks
who I grieved—
I told her how my heart broke
and my soul became lost
in a functional world
we confessed our sins
and absolved each other
we laughed real laughter
she said she understood me.
impressed her
I shared my music
my poetry, my art
I was so
she said she wanted to model for me
and the illusion began to crack
because the real me does not
(cannot) exist
and I’ll never see her naked—
so I paid for the drinks
grateful for the opportunity
to pretend
   to be me
       for a night

Author's Note
The story was ok and whoever played the girl was amazing, but I thought the lead was miscast.
