monochrome moments

  
monochrome memories
a moment shared and then poof...gone  
touching one another if only for an instant  
   
a sparkle in the eye or a genuine smile  
the caress of a hand that lingers a little too long  
arousing curiosity...is he? could he be drawn to me?  
then quickly dismissed when self-doubt clouds my intuition    
   
it hurts to put yourself out there  
the idea of looking foolish...a thief of endless possibilities    
the thief of new romance...pride  
don't put yourself out there you might get hurt  
   
we ache with passion it's the human condition  
love in full bloom so beautiful to behold  
we look on happy but envious inside  
   
life happens in moments  
they make this life worthwhile  
still, we chalk them up to nothing  
the checker at the grocery store  
who chats with you so animatedly    
   
the stranger who smiles with their eyes  
penetrating your shield and reaching in to touch you  
I have given such looks and gotten them too  
they stroke my ego but go nowhere  
   
my insecurity won't let me put myself out there  
doubts of yeah if only they really knew me  
they would reject the woman I am behind everything  
   
so I covet the moments when I'm caught being beautiful  
and a stranger reflects this beauty back to me  
a snapshot of me when I'm found lovely  
monochrome moments, snapshots of who we really are  
   
perhaps I will take a chance today  
maybe it's worth the gamble  
to take a moment and create living color memories  
that last a lifetime
