When Summers Lasted Forever
Back when Chevys had fins and gas had lead
When I was a kid and magic seemed real
Firetrucks sirens were loud and summer lasted forever
Fresh cut grass was football games
Homemade bread was my grandmother’s house
Strong coffee was my parents talking to my aunt and uncle
Riding bicycles in the rain and summer seemed to last forever
Garden dirt was grandpa showing what he had planted out back
Dark chocolate was exotic and campfires were adventure
Brownies baking were weekends and fresh towels were time for a shower
Chlorine was swimming pools and summers lasted forever
Line dried sheets fresh from the backyard were a heavenly bed
Baby snuggles meant my big sister was sitting someone’s kids
Apple pie was a family reunion with homemade ice cream
Neighborhood baseball games and summer lasted forever
Banana boat sunscreen was vacations on the coast
Right before it rains meant time for a nap
Building a fort and pillow fights before mother sorted us out
Leather boots meant hiking and fishing trips
New books meant back to school and summer was finally over
And those memories will last ever

And those memories will last ever
