Dawn Of A New Day

downtown
past the levee
beyond the lakefront

lukewarm waffles
consumed by men who talk
of laodicean liberty

ready for labor
on loom
or lithograph

docks of wood
factories of
brick and steel

lampblack night
fading to
pastel morning

scent of lilac
in spring air

gives luster
to an otherwise
ordinary morning
