When you read the books
(the bodice rippers)
You want to live the fantasy

Reluctant heroine
Overtaken by love for the
Handsome bad boy

So exciting
When eventually
His true nature is revealed

Brave rescuer
Saves the day
She surrenders

Story ends
Happily ever after

I can be the rescuer
Take you away from the boredom
Make fantasy into reality

For a while
We go deep into
unexplored territory

For a while
Fantasy seems like reality

Reality is not fantasy

Work, bills, children
Death and illness
Do not disappear
When you are rescued

Sometimes the rescuer
Needs to be rescued

We are human
Flawed and imperfect
But always learning

We take risks
with pain and pleasure
Fire and ice

We get burned (or frozen)
That goes with the territory

We do our best
To make it right
And then

With new lessons in hand
We push on again
Into unexplored territory

So if you think you can take it
Then light the match
And start the bonfire

but if you are timid and shy
crawl back into your cave
where it is safe, warm
…and boring
