You Wouldn’t Understand

I find myself walled up in the
catacombs of my mind screaming
“Amontillado” at the top of my lungs
while I walk away laughing.

Ancient runes lost to time
Stories I’ve told no one

I sift through my artifacts:
Picture of us, gifted
Letter of breakup, left on a pillow
Love’s Journal, abandoned
Picture of you, stolen
My love will not echo in eternity
Nor would my rage if I had any left
I leave a small wake behind me
Enough to know I lived for a time
And so I turned to Mother Earth
Took a drag of my cigarette
A sip of my bourbon and said:
“You’re only as interesting as your secrets”
She didn’t go home with me,
But she thought about it.
