Seen Better Days

A cold night, at least colder than most.
I am on my way home to a party I am soon to host.
A leisurely walk to the nearest convenience store
I take my time enjoying the cool silence more and more.
Chips, soda, and frozen pizza fill my bag to the top
almost as if I am a walking snack shop.
Thinking about the upcoming events of the night
I begin to drift back to reality and regain my sight.
People with no belongings crowd the street,
they have nothing, not even shoes on their feet.
Christmas is in the air, i just have that feeling.
I feel awful knowing none of these people live under a ceiling.
Sitting down I see a man,
It seems he owns nothing but a handheld fan.
A little conversation would not hurt,
So i take a seat next to him in the dirt.

"Why do you have a fan in the winter?" I ask the guy.
There was no reply.

He looks at me, anguish in his face,
Is he trying to tell me I am out of place?
He slowly moves the fan closer to me.
Orange was its color but it was dark and I could hardly see.
The back of the fan where the batteries go reveals a surprise,
M&M's of different colors but all the same size.

"They remind me of the family I once had,"
I begin to know his pain and feel sad.

The elaborate story of his life had begun,
HE was pushed away, ignored and shunned.
The family he once had abandoned him.
Once a good size he lost weight and now is slim.
He needs a friend, maybe just a little compassion.
Anyone who does not look down upon him because of his fashion.
I leave him that night to freeze in the weather,
I left him with my snack shop with hope that he feels better.
