vagabond

I ate your heart with a plastic fork
disposable love with little meaning
I hate myself for hurting you

a vagabond soul with no feelings to call home
I am an abandoned house at noon
the halls still echo with laughter
but the love has long since vacated

my humanity is just like that...empty
I pull my feelings out of cardboard boxes
trace my fingers over them softly
little treasures of a past life when you still loved me

I ache with bitter regret
black crows pick at what remains
soon there will be nothing left for even the birds to eat

but I have a secret they don't know---
I've hidden pieces of you for safe keeping
pressed deeply in my heart there is still an us

life means nothing without you
so I neatly fold my emotions and put them in my backpack
head east..thinking maybe if I walk far enough
east will meet west

and I'll run into you on a day like today
and you'll be there smiling at me sunshine
I think maybe just maybe---
given another chance, I wouldn't be so careless with your heart
