Image for the poem lonely midnights

lonely midnights

the switchblade in your smile was always a warning
you were armed to slice and eviscerate with nothing but words
you never were so cruel as you were with your mouth
you zeroed in on my every weakness real or perceived

always on the attack, lest I question you about your mistresses
the lies in your eyes told me everything I needed to know
the how and why of it was a mystery to me weren't we enough?

in your mean days, you would set me up for an argument
and I played into it defending myself
until finally, you would storm out

it was always your intention to leave
you just wanted me to give you an excuse
one day I wouldn't argue...you didn't know what to do

so you sat there and retreated into the dark
I covet your darkness...you wear it like midnights
nothing touches you in the void, where you are perfectly at home

it's so cold in this perfect isolation I can't reach you
so I cry alone at the perimeter you've set
and wait for you to come back to me

now when you attack in anger I can't be hurt
understanding your brokenness I let you go a cutting
in the onyx twilight, we are forever alone together

bleeding eternally
