how can we escape this?
He uses his words as weapons
to get what he wants
and the bruises they leave
are ones you can't see
and I wish it was as easy
as just walking away
to save you
to save me
from the things that'll still haunt
in a million tomorrows
I've heard words that aren't true
in arguments that are flawed
but it doesn't stop the shaky stutter
of fear in my voice
that can't defend you
that can't defend me
from the war that's raging in his mind
and on his tongue
there was no sense in yesterday's battles
and tomorrow's will make
no more sense than today's
He uses his words as weapons
to get what he wants
and the bruises they leave
are ones you can't see
in the eye of the storm
I seek answers to questions
I can't yet articulate
in the hopes they'll save us
one day not far from now
where I can answer the phone without screening
check my texts without jumping at the sound
and sleep without wondering
if he'll come to my door in the night
to restart the war he's raging
He uses his words as weapons
to get what he wants
and the bruises they leave
are ones you can't see
